How to Spot a Broadband Phone Scammer

If you are a phone owner then it is likely that you have received a scam call at least once in your life. Every day people fall victim to these calls, as scammers are becoming more and more convincing now more than ever.

Most individuals will be extremely cautious with financial and personal data scams as these are more common to occur. However, broadband customers across the globe report that they are being contacted by fake broadband services claiming they are from the support team of their ISP.

In this article, we will help you to learn how to notice a broadband phone scammer in order to keep you safe.

Your broadband provider likely wouldn’t call you

If the person on the other end of the phone is telling you that there is a problem with your router, this person is a scammer. The only one who will know of router connection problems in your home is you and anyone else who lives there. ISP provides their services to millions of people across the country.

If there is a problem with your broadband connection from their side, they will likely put a status on their website or social accounts informing their users. The amount of time it would take to contact each and every individual customer over the phone wouldn’t be worth the resources ultimately.

What to do if your router isn’t working properly

Since your broadband provider won’t be in touch with you, it might be worth getting a hold of their support on the phone instead. If your regular troubleshooting doesn’t solve the problem then it might be a problem on their side. If you can speak with one of their team then you could find the answer from them.

How to tell if you are being scammed

There are a couple of things which you can do over the phone to ensure that the person you are talking to is who they say they are. Firstly, start by asking them who your broadband is being provided to you by. If you are using BT and they respond with “BT Openreach”, then this is a scam so do be aware of this.

Secondly, ask them some questions about the router you have currently. If you ask them what model it is and they use the word “hub”, this means they have no clue how to answer correctly because they are a scammer.

Finally, do a quick Google search of the phone number they are contacting you with. If the number is a scammer, you will likely see plenty of scam checking websites pop up flagging it as unsafe. If the number is genuine, you will see your broadband provider’s website appear on the search results.

Always check for broadband phone scammers

If you have applied all of the previously mentioned tips and are still unsure, let that person know that you will contact them back directly. Your ISP will acknowledge that you are requesting this due to your own safety. They will not have any issue with you calling them back.

If you do call them back, it would be safer to phone from a different device. Some scammers will keep their line open in order to pretend to be your ISP.
