Is Your Broadband Contract Ending? Watch Out For Price Hikes

Think back to 2019, did you purchase a Black Friday broadband deal? If so then you’ll be faced with a new contract on behalf of your service provider, only these new contracts won’t be quite as lucrative as the ones bought 18 months ago.

If you have received a recent end of contract notification from your network provider, this means your broadband plan is coming to an end. Your service provider will move you onto a more expensive e out-of-contract tariff, which has been known to cost customers up to £114 extra per year.

Luckily, there are methods to curtail price hikes from happening. Read on to find out how you can do that.

HAVE I RECEIVED AN END OF CONTRACT NOTIFICATION?

Internet service providers are obliged to send out reminders when customers are nearing the end of their current contract, usually with a list of options that provide customers with some insight in what steps to take next. This became a legal requirement after a huge amount of broadband consumers reported that they fell into an expensive out our contract plan without their knowledge.

A notification is sent out between 10 and 40 days from the end of contract date, usually by email, letter or text. If you are nearing the end of your contract and haven’t received a notification, make sure you check your junk mail, spam and ensure you haven’t thrown any letters away, the notification can easily be mistaken for standard marketing communications.

The message will contain offers for new broadband packages that you can take out with the same provider but bear in mind those are the deals they want you to pick, so feel free to shop around for an improved deal.

For example, if you are using a copper broadband connection, it's advisable to switch to a fibre broadband deal which would give you an enormous speed boost, just run a speed test comparison to find out.

You’ll find that in the case of this broadband switch, the price difference is far less than expected. You’d be tripling your internet speed for practically the same price you’re paying now.

Providers with Broadband Contracts Ending

If you are a customer of one of the following service providers and you took out a broadband contract around Black Friday 2019, you should be able to switch to a new package:

  • Sky
  • TalkTalk
  • Plusnet
  • EE
  • SSE
  • OneStream
  • POP Telecom
  • Origin

It is worth noting that even if you have a different provider, you could still be eligible to make a switch. The majority of broadband contracts last between 12 and 24 months. If you haven’t updated your contract, your contract ending date could be fast approaching.

Make sure to keep an eye out for your end of contract notification, if you miss it, you could end up on the receiving end of a massive price hike.
