Getting The Most From Your Home Broadband
There’s nothing worse than slow home broadband, especially in the current climate where more of us are unable to go into the office. But before you consider changing broadband providers, here are some inexpensive quick fixes you can try.
Try a Speed Test
A speed test will show you exactly what speed you’re getting from your broadband provider. There are many free broadband speed checker websites to choose from, including our very own which you can use here. Once you’ve received the results, make a note of them. As you go through the potential fixes below, continue to run tests and see if your speed issue is resolved.
Disconnect Devices
The more devices that are connected to your broadband, the slower your internet speed will be. Try disconnecting Wi-fi on any devices that you aren’t currently using, such as mobiles, tablets or consoles. These devices will often be using your home broadband signal in the background and slowing down your connection.
Move Router
Wi-fi routers will provide you with the best signal when they’re out in the open and placed high up on a shelf or cabinet. There are many locations that can affect the signal and cause slow speeds. For example, if your router is next to any furniture, up against a wall, or near any electrical equipment, there’s a chance that it will be weakened.
Try a Wired Connection
Whilst it may feel old school, try using an ethernet cable that’s plugged directly into your laptop or computer. A wired connection will encounter much less interference and should give you a consistently reliable connection, something which a wireless connection can’t always provide.
Buy a Wi-fi Extender
If you’re spending most of your time in a room that’s away from your router, a Wi-fi extender can boost the signal and improve your speed. Cheap extenders won’t increase your speed by much, but they can extend the signal into any ‘dead zones’ you have in your home.
Upgrade Your Router
If your router is a couple of years old, it could be the root cause for your broadband issues. Consider upgrading to the newest version if one is available. You can do this by contacting your ISP (internet service provider) and asking if you can have the latest router upgrade sent to you.
If you’re still having issues with your home broadband speed, you may want to consider switching providers. Use our broadband comparison website tool to find the best deal for you here.
