Things You Need to Know About Broadband Deals in the UK

From the best TalkTalk deals, Virgin Media, Sky and a variety of other major fibre-optic providers, there’s always a new deal on offer.

How can you identify which broadband deal or provider is the right one for you? Luckily, here at BroadbandMoneySaver we know exactly what to look out for when looking for a new broadband provider.

Broadband Deal Know-hows

Each year, millions of people across the UK blindly overpay for their internet service. This is usually determined by households that purchase an unnecessary package, meaning a two person household paying over the odds per month for lightning fast broadband would certainly be defined as unnecessary.

Here’s a couple of things you should know, they could help you save money.

Broadband Speed That Suits You

As previously stated, one of the most common reasons why people are overpaying for their internet service is because of their fibre optic speed. While we all desire ‘snap of the finger’ internet speed, the offer for 100MB per second is not overly outperforming a package with 30MB. The lesson here is that average speeds are okay.

Of course network traffic may impact the speed of your internet but that is dependent on the amount of users connected to the internet. If you have a small household and only a handful of devices within the bandwidth then you don’t need to splash out on mega broadband deals just to get a faster connection.

Broadband is Cheaper With a Home Phone

Most broadband providers require you to have a landline installed when the engineers come to fit the router and accompanying wiring. It is common to believe that a package without the phone line is cheaper, as you have one less feature to pay for. In most cases, it is actually the cheaper option to have a phone connection fitted alongside the broadband.

Virgin Media and BT offer a number of broadband-only deals, but these are usually expensive so it’s almost always cheaper to go with the phone line.

Know When You’re Entitled to Compensation

Seven of the UK’s leading service providers operate under Ofcom's Automatic Compensation Scheme. BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin Media, Hyperoptic, Utility Warehouse and Zen are all obligated to award their customers with compensation if one of the following problems occurs:

  • If your service stops working and is not repaired within two working days of reporting it, you'll receive £8.06, and then £8.06 for each day it remains unfixed.
  • If your new landline or broadband service is not up and running on the day promised, you'll receive £5.04 for each day it's delayed, including the missed start date.
  • If an engineer doesn't arrive as scheduled, or an appointment is cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice, you'll receive £25.18.

How to Complain About Your Service Provider

If your service provider isn’t signed up for Ofcom's legislation, you are within your right to make a complaint. Resolver offers a tool that can draft your complaint and manage it too. If the complaint isn't resolved, Resolver can escalate it to the free Communications and Internet Services Adjudication Scheme or Ombudsman Services. This is dependent on the company in question.
